MONITORING VISIT TO DAVAO MANGO FARMERS

December 11-16, 2012

I. FARMERS MEETING:

 

  1. On December 11-15, 2012, Donardo Angeles-The Producer’s Developmet Officer / Agriculturist  of Preda Pro Fair Trade visited the Davao Mango Farmers supplying carabao mangoes. Two (2) new women’s orghaization were also met. To date we already have 5 mango growers totalling to 74 farmers having 2,084 trees with estimated harvest of 455,690 kilos..During the meeting the following were discussed:
  1. Evaluation of Fair Trade programs and Preda Fair Trade Orientation.
  2. Monitoring of Price through texting-The producer can directy text Ms. Merlinda of Profood-Davao to know the current buying price of mango per kilo.
  3. Marking of Boxes- The boxes of the mango harvest to be delivered to Preda-Profood is to be mark containing Preda FairTrade, Name of farmer, Date of harvest and box number.( please find attached sample copy)
  4. The Preda staff checked the yellow card- the individual mango selling record to be verified at Profood record.

 

During the visit, monitoring of projects where the farmers used their  Fair Trade premium was done. Among the projects they invested their premium were sari-sari store and hog raising. Some used dividend in repairing/rehabilitating their house

II. VALIDATION OF FARM MAPS & MANGO TREES

 

Farm visit was conducted to verify the mango trees . The farm map on the information form was compared to the actual mango trees on farm.

In Kapalong & Asuncion Group, monitoring of mango trees damaged by Typhoon Pablo was conducted. A total of 36 mango trees are damaged or fell down. Estimated of 25,000 kilos of mango fruits were loss.

III. VERIFICATION OF MANGO DELIVERIES

 

In preparation for the awarding of Fair Trade Premium this year, I conducted the validation of the mango deliveries. The record I got from the yellow card was then compared in the record of the Profood Warehouse in Panabo & Toril. For the Period August 1 to December 15, 2012 Below are the summary of deliveries per organization and the Fair Trade Premium.

V. MEETING WITH CARLOS CONTRERAS

 

On December 15, 2012, I met with Mr. Carlos Contreras – mango consolidator of Profood in Mindanao area (Panabo warehouse). We discussed the marking of boxes with PREDA Fair Trade. Also information of the name of farmer, date of delivery and box number is also included in the label. This is with regards to traceability. It was agreed that  Profood cebu will be notified by Joel Cahatol (Panabo warehouseman) thru the fax transmittal of mango to be delivered ( number of boxes for Preda will be noted at the fax.

 

There are three (3) possible areas for expansion ; area of Carmen, Sto. Thomas and Tagum City.
